Many of you have been writing in to us asking about the status of our podcasts.  Since launching this new version of the site last summer, we've had a few unexpected problems on the backend.  Sometimes, this has caused the entire site to be unavailable and for this we ask your patience and prayers as we work to correct these problems.

Right now, we're working to re-structure the podcast section to make it more impervious to these changes.  Please stay tuned for an announcement about this sometime next week, in sha' Allah.

As for our events, our calendar is updated weekly with listings for classes and programs.  This semester, we're holding the following short classes every week:

Mondays
Iftar after Maghrib
Farsi Class at 5pm
Brothers' Halaqah at 6:30pm

Tuesdays
Sisters' Halaqah  at 3:30pm
Sister's Tajweed  at 6:30pm

Wednesdays
Stories from the Seerah at 12:30pm
Qur'anic Reflections at 3:30pm

Thursdays
Iftar after Maghrib
The Beautiful Names of Allah at 12:30pm
Brothers' Tajweed at 2pm & 6:30pm

As usual, Jummah prayers are held every Friday from 1:30pm - 2pm.  Unless otherwise stated, all classes and programs are held at the Islamic Center, on 371 6th Avenue (at Washington Place).  For directions, please see here.

Before attending, please check our website for any last-minutes changes or cancellations.

Alhamdulillah, the Islamic Center now has a secure wireless Internet connection as well as multiple computers that are Internet ready and equipped with the Microsoft Office suite.  Feel free to connect with your laptops to do work or use one of our computers.

We have also started to set up a study area and plan on offering print services in the coming weeks, in sha' Allah.

Additionally we will start offering snacks such as fruit and cookies as well as beverages such as hot chocolate, coffee, tea, juice and water in the coming weeks, in sha' Allah.

If you would like to donate to this endeavor, please contact Khalid Latif.

In an ongoing effort to offer our students the greatest number of opportunities for scholarships and advanced study, I wanted to make sure that you are aware of NYU's Reynolds Program in Social Entrepreneurship (www.nyu.edu/reynolds/undergrad). Now in its third year, the program offers up to ten scholarships to rising juniors from across the university who are interested in changing the world for the better; it also provides a fairly intensive co-curricular component designed both to augment each student's chosen course of study and to help each student realize a vision for creating sustainable and scalable change.

The program is looking for academically accomplished students with leadership potential and the drive and determination to have a positive impact on the world.  Eligible candidates can be interested in developing and executing an idea for change, being part of the infrastructure needed to carry it out, or inspiring others to action through media and the arts. The most successful candidates tend to be students who have already distinguished themselves in their various NYU schools.

Applications are due January 27, 2009. If you have any questions at all, please contact the Director of the NYU Reynolds Program, Gabriel Brodbar, at gabriel.brodbar@nyu.edu or 212-998-7445.

Many thanks,

Matthew S. Santirocco, Professor of Classics
Seryl Kushner Dean, College of Arts and Science
Associate Provost for Undergraduate Academic Affairs
Angelo J. Ranieri Director of Ancient Studies

The Islamic Center is subsidizing the cost by $5 per person to bring the price to $10.95.  Students on meal plans can use their swipes here.

The meal contains:
- Strip Loin Steak
- Yukon Gold Potatoes
- Corn on the Cob
- Fresh Tossed Caesar Salad & Roll
- Fountain beverage or bottled water

We will have the back of the 3rd Floor Dining Hall reserved for people from the Islamic Center.

For those of you who are vegetarian or vegan, there will be alternative options available, in sha' Allah.

There will be NO IFTAR at the Islamic Center on this day.  Everyone is encouraged to come here instead.  You don't have to be an NYU student to attend.

Please RSVP to Khalid Latif by 8pm on Wednesday, 10/22, so we can get an accurate head count.

Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR), the national media watch group, released a first-of-its-kind report today that profiles 12 of the leading Islamophobic pundits and media figures and examines the ways they've negatively influenced media coverage in the U.S.  The report, "Smearcasting: How Islamophobes Spread Fear, Bigotry and Mis-information," describes a loose network of right-wing, anti-Muslim partisans who regularly use innuendo, questionable sources of information and even lies to smear, and effectively marginalize, Muslim Americans in the media.

The report is available for download at: http://www.smearcasting.com/
