After a credible and confirmed moon sighting report from Florida on the evening of Friday, November 28th, the first day of the new Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah was observed on Saturday, November 29th, 2008.

Dhul Hijjah, the last of 12 months in the Islamic calendar, takes its name from the annual Hajj pilgrimage which takes place within the first 10 days of the month and culminates in the final gathering at Mount 'Arafah on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah.  Every year, millions of Muslims make the pilgrimage to Mecca to fulfill this right which is only required of those who have the means of going.

Image
The first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah are a very blessed time during which Muslims should strive to engage in extra worship and be extra vigilant about refraining from sin.  Of special importance is fasting on the Day of 'Arafah, which falls this year on Sunday, December 7th.  The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, has said that fasting on this day atones for sins from the past and coming year (Sahih Muslim).

For more details, please read this short article by Imam Zaid Shakir or listen to this audio lecture by Shaykh Husain Abdul Sattar.

The follow day, Monday, December 8th, is Eid al-Adha, and the Islamic Center will be holding Eid prayers at our 6th Avenue location at 8am.  The service will be followed by a light brunch, in sha' Allah, and everyone is invited and encouraged to attend.

For students who need excused absences for classes with mandatory attendance or have time conflicts with papers or exams, please email Chaplain Khalid Latif with the following information:

- your professor's full name
- your professor's email address
- the day, timing, and name of your class
- your name as it would be appear on the class roster

Many of you have been writing in to us asking about the status of our podcasts.  Since launching this new version of the site last summer, we've had a few unexpected problems on the backend.  Sometimes, this has caused the entire site to be unavailable and for this we ask your patience and prayers as we work to correct these problems.

Right now, we're working to re-structure the podcast section to make it more impervious to these changes.  Please stay tuned for an announcement about this sometime next week, in sha' Allah.

As for our events, our calendar is updated weekly with listings for classes and programs.  This semester, we're holding the following short classes every week:

Mondays
Iftar after Maghrib
Farsi Class at 5pm
Brothers' Halaqah at 6:30pm

Tuesdays
Sisters' Halaqah  at 3:30pm
Sister's Tajweed  at 6:30pm

Wednesdays
Stories from the Seerah at 12:30pm
Qur'anic Reflections at 3:30pm

Thursdays
Iftar after Maghrib
The Beautiful Names of Allah at 12:30pm
Brothers' Tajweed at 2pm & 6:30pm

As usual, Jummah prayers are held every Friday from 1:30pm - 2pm.  Unless otherwise stated, all classes and programs are held at the Islamic Center, on 371 6th Avenue (at Washington Place).  For directions, please see here.

Before attending, please check our website for any last-minutes changes or cancellations.

In an ongoing effort to offer our students the greatest number of opportunities for scholarships and advanced study, I wanted to make sure that you are aware of NYU's Reynolds Program in Social Entrepreneurship (www.nyu.edu/reynolds/undergrad). Now in its third year, the program offers up to ten scholarships to rising juniors from across the university who are interested in changing the world for the better; it also provides a fairly intensive co-curricular component designed both to augment each student's chosen course of study and to help each student realize a vision for creating sustainable and scalable change.

The program is looking for academically accomplished students with leadership potential and the drive and determination to have a positive impact on the world.  Eligible candidates can be interested in developing and executing an idea for change, being part of the infrastructure needed to carry it out, or inspiring others to action through media and the arts. The most successful candidates tend to be students who have already distinguished themselves in their various NYU schools.

Applications are due January 27, 2009. If you have any questions at all, please contact the Director of the NYU Reynolds Program, Gabriel Brodbar, at gabriel.brodbar@nyu.edu or 212-998-7445.

Many thanks,

Matthew S. Santirocco, Professor of Classics
Seryl Kushner Dean, College of Arts and Science
Associate Provost for Undergraduate Academic Affairs
Angelo J. Ranieri Director of Ancient Studies
