Introduction

The Islamic Center at NYU serves the Muslim population at New York University, a private institution of higher education and research located in lower Manhattan, one of the world's most innovative and important cities.

The founders of the Islamic Center could not have imagined the prosperity of their enterprise. Founded twenty-five years ago, the Islamic Center became a University institution in June of 2007, an official confirmation of its sustained growth and ambition.

The Islamic Center at NYU is overseen by the Office of the Chaplain and its staff, a position established to provide an Imam to meet the religious and social needs of all individuals at the Islamic Center. Through the tireless efforts of its staff, the Islamic Center has been able to provide not only its regular religious services but increased student access to Islamic education and values.

The Islamic Center functions as an umbrella organization for student clubs catering to specific Muslim strengths and interests, bringing together the following groups: Aftab, a monthly magazine; Shuruq, a theme week Celebrating the many cultures of the Muslim world, the Islamic Law Students Association; the Muslim Medical Students Association; the United Muslim Association, the Muslim Medical Students Assocation, the Muslim Graduate Students Group, and the Islamic Center at NYU Alumni Association.
